PRINCE GEORGE – Council has approved spending $260,000 to get Studio 2880 functional.

In the report to Council, Administration noted “… in order to extend the life of their current buildings as long as realistically possible, administration has identified ‘required’ repairs and maintenance that are necessary to ensure the viability of their current spaces for the short term.”

It was also noted the work would extend the livability of that building by about five years.

But the matter elicited great debate.

“I’m struggling with this,” noted Councillor Kyle Sampson. “We’re putting money into something we’re going to tear down.”

The City is in the midst of preparing a Civic Core Plan, which will incorporate an arts element.

But it was referred to as a band-aid when there was always a plan to have the Arts Council move into the former Bank of Montreal building on Third Avenue, but federal funding was not forthcoming and that plan never proceeded.

In the end, Council voted to spend the money on the facility, which will come from the federally-funded Community Works Fund, which is a federal pot of money not taxpayer dollars.
