Former teacher speaks out against SD57 Special Advisors report

PRINCE GEORGE – Nearly one year after it was released by the Ministry of Education, a former School District 57 teacher is speaking out against the Special Advisors Report.

The report released back in August 2021 talked about deep systemic racism in education, discrimination, and outdated practices specifically affecting Indigenous students. Outlined in the document were 45 recommendations to help fix the problems a trio of special advisors appointed by the Education Minister had identified through interviews, and time in local schools.

Erica McLean was one of those interviewed, a teacher of 10 years from the Hazelton area who grew up on the Gitaanmax Band reserve part of the Gitxsan First Nations.

When she first laid her eyes on the report she was shocked.

“I guess I first have to acknowledge that this is a really difficult conversation,” said McLean. “What I really feel like is that, that work is happening in schools and when this report was released it didn’t necessarily capture [what was going on] and actually deflated some of the work that was already happening.

McLean said she and others were deflated to read of the deep problems in School District 57, a narrative she believes was painted onto everyone and wasn’t necessarily true. She believes the report is a product of a poor relationship and not accurate of the current state of local schools.

Across the district McLean said there are many others who feel the way she does.

“Educators do really care,” said McLean.who believes this is a great illustration of how a narrative can take control and impact students, often some of the most vulnerable students.

That narrative actually led to McLean resigning from her job as a teacher with a focus on finding a different way to create changes.

CKPG News reached out to the BC Ministry of Education who declined an interview but did issue a statement:

The Ministry continues to support and monitor the Board’s work to ensure that student outcomes and persistent inequities for Indigenous students are addressed. This includes through the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning to assist in the board’s strategic planning and jointly with FNESC through the First Nations Educational Outcomes Improvement Team.

SD57 and the Board of Education declined to comment.
