PRINCE GEORGE – For the past six years, a Prince George resident has spent most weekends picking up litter around the city. Recently, he discovered an app that maps the amount and location of trash.

Frank Ogiamien has the most modern trash picker tool in the city. His smartphone is actually mounted on to take a picture every time he picks something up.

In just over two years, the amount of data he collected showed trends.

Frank Ogiamien “I think there’s a lot of uses for the data. Like maybe high school students could collect some data and build projects with it just to show how much plastic is out there. And then even higher up, like college or university, students could use the data for building A.I. models to recognize the types of litter.”

Ogiamien has picked up roughly 55 thousand pieces of litter. Each scrap is logged on a map with the app Open Litter. The data then displays where the city has the most trash.

According to the app’s creator, mapping litter can show how polluted the world is and potentially encourage others not to do it in the first place.
