‘It’s like losing a family member’: Reaction pours in following fire at beloved Spruce City Stadium

PRINCE GEORGE – As officials continue to investigate what caused the devastating fire at Spruce City Stadium on Wednesday reactions from across the community continue to pour in.

“We lost everything,” said Peter Ghostkeeper, “I’ve put a lot of time in this ballpark, sometimes ten-hour days five days a week, so when it goes it’s going to be sentimental.”

Ghostkeeper has been the President of the Spruce City Men’s Fastball League since the late 2000s, back in the 1960s he actually helped build the park and the concession with his late brother.

“My late brother when he died said Peter see if you can get to 50 years, we passed it now but still, there were a lot of good people who worked in there,” said Ghostkeeper.

Over the years the park has been the host of events far beyond fastball, including funerals, weddings, and gatherings for Indigenous people.

“We will do whatever we can to return it to its former glory,” said Harley Desjarlais. “Today though we will mourn our loss and celebrate its contribution to our community, we will overcome.”

Desjarlais has been involved in the local fastball scene for years, recently acting as the President of the 2022 Canadian Native Fastball Championships.

Prince George RCMP continues to investigate the fire for possible arson. If you have any information you are asked to contact police.
