McLeod Lake- The McLeod Lake Indian Band held the first ever walk to remember Wednesday, a four-kilometre walk to honour those tragically killed walking highway 97.

Dozens of members of the McLeod Lake Indian Band came together and carried the names and photos of their loved ones on their sleeves while making the trip south on highway 97 back to Mcleod Lake.

The walk to remember is expected to become a tradition, and the hope is to help bring awareness to the issue.

“None of these people have ever been charged that have hit our people on the highway,” said Margie Chingee, elders coordinator for the McLeod Lake Indian Band.

The centrepiece of the walk was a large banner created by members of the band.

“We put this together when we made the decision to do a walk to remember,” said Adelia Chingee, the band manager. “That’s in memory of them. Our message to them is that they’re still deep in our thoughts and always in our hearts and every day.”

The walk was met with great support from highway traffic, who honked their horns and waved while passing the band.
