To Your Health: Childhood Vaccines

Polio, Tetanus and measles are all things you have probably heard about, but chances are you don’t know someone who has suffered from the conditions. That is in large part due to the development of vaccines. However with the recent approval of the Moderna covid vaccine for use in children not many people have jumped at the opportunity to get their kids vaxxed.

“It’s just a really good way to protect children from sort of anything but COVID right now is the main thing that we’re thinking about. So it just adds that extra layer of protection to prevent any sort of severe illness if they ever are exposed to COVID. Everyone responds differently, for sure, to vaccines, but they have waited two plus years to use them in children,” Brianna Pallot a Pharmacist at Third Avenue Pharmacy.

Many are concerned about the side effects of the vaccine, but experts say that the vaccine is safe.

“I just want to say that the COVID vaccine is safe for children and that it has been a rigorous review and that rigorous monitoring will continue. COVID vaccination continues to be the key part of how we can be healthy and safe throughout this Covid era,” said Jong Kim, a medical health officer from Northern Health.

While the current literature says the vaccines are safe and one of the most effective tools we have against fighting diseases including the COVID-19 virus.

“So they have done more testing. There is always potential for any sort of side effects, like sore arm flu like symptoms that you can have with any vaccine. But it usually subsides within about 72 hours,” said Pallot.
