Mega Park gets closer look

PRINCE GEORGE – A treed lot at the corner of 22nd Avenue and Ospika Boulevard was initially identified as a possible location location for a Mega Park and a recent survey of more than two thousand residents indicated it was a popular choice.

And as far as Mayor Lyn Hall, once its in place, the park will be an asset to that neighbourhood and the community.

“Fantastic asset for the City. We did see through the survey, and a couple of things stood out for me. What if you put the park in our neighbourhood because we don’t have a neighbourhood park. There’s a give and take here. We hear all the time that they want more greenspace and they want more parks.”

Councillor Cori Ramsay frequented the Parksville Community Park regularly growing up. It was considered a destination park for many people in the region.

“They have this big, 39-acres mega park there. It’s quite the attraction and to this day, every time I go back to the Island to visit family, we always go to the Parksville Community Park to hand out with our nieces and nephews and have family gatherings.”

The survey asked how repsodents feels about the idea and 58 percent were positive about while 34 percent were neutral and eight percent weren’t keen on it. The survey also asked respondents is they are in favour of the park knowing there would be an annual cost to the City’s budget. Three quarters said yes, while the no’s and the not sure’s were pretty evenly split at 14 and 12 percent, respectively.

Councillor Ramsay says the majority of the respondents think its a great idea …

“But also a significant also said ‘But I want to see what it costs’ And so does Council. So we’re going to take a look at that.”

That’s why Council has asked to have a built os a better break down of not only what the park would look like, how it will cost to build it and, more significantly, what will it cost to maintain it?

“There’s going to be a need to formulate that partnership with the other organizations that are involved of it,” says Mayor Hall. “How do they fit in? Quite often we take the lead on things. It doesn’t mean we become a financial partner in it.”

The idea of a destination park was launched in February of this year. Preliminary designs have a splash park like that in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, an adventure park similar to that at Duchess Park. But one thing the city lacks and this park will include a Red Bull certified pump track.
