PRINCE GEORGE – Cannabis retailers have popped up all over the city since it became legal. And now the BC Craft Framers Co-Op, is touring the province, meeting with cannabis farmers, processors, retailers and just about anyone else interested in the economic potential of cannabis production.

Grasshoppers was the first retailer in Prince George and much has changed.

“I think we started out with 45 different skews when we opened in July 2019,” says Joe Postnikoff, Owner of Grasshoppers. “And now we’re over different skews. So we have beverages, we have cartridges that weren’t available to us when we first opened.”

But Postnikoff says the industsry is very regulated by the Province, who calls the shots in terms product. He says it would be nice to have a greater say in what products they sell. That’s the retail end of things. As for the production side, rule make it harder for smaller producers to catch the eye of the Province, though change is coming.

“There’s so many avenues for the growers,” says Tara Fitzpatrick, who owns Backwoods BC Bud. “We can be in store fronts right now plau with these direct sales coming on. Live plants and so on. Tourism as well.”

Enter, Community Futures of Fraser Fort George. “With the new regulations coming in to play, there’s new the opportunities, says Susan Stearns.

The new regulations will kick in the fall, opening up direct sales and farm gate stores.
