PRINCE GEORGE — The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation will host a community event to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It will take place on September 30 at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park from 2 to 3 p.m.

Chief Dolleen Logan says public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation effort.

“National Day for Truth & Reconciliation is a very tough day for Indigenous people across Canada. There isn’t an Indigenous nation, community or family which is not touched by the horrors that occurred in Canada’s residential schools between the mid-1800s and the early 1990s.”

“Unlike the LTFN National Indigenous Peoples Day Event which celebrates Indigenous history, culture and traditions, the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Event will be more solemn and reflective,” says National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Event Leader Jen Rubadeau.

“The powerful educational event will feature a healing ceremony and includes storytelling, singing, and drumming. The event is for all Indigenous and Non-Indigenous members of the community.”

She says the event will also include acknowledgement of the 215 unmarked graves found last year at the former Kamloops Residential School.
