Battleship Mountain fire west of Hudson’s Hope grows to 2,000 hectares

HUDSON’S HOPE — Residents of Hudson’s Hope are breathing a little easier today as crews have made progress in their battle against the Dinosaur Lake fire.

Located just five kilometres from the Peace Canyon Dam and Hudson’s Hope Bridge, crews have held the fire to three hectares in size and crews have worked to establish a perimeter of containment around it.

Crews have had less success though against another fire in the region, the lightning caused Battleship Mountain blaze, located about 45 kilometres west of the community.

The fire is growing rapidly, leading to an evacuation alert in multiple areas, including the north shore of Williston Lake.

“We are seeing significant growth today. There are hot and dry conditions locally there. And adding to that, we have high winds in that area. So, they’re seeing sustained winds of approximately 20 kilometres per hour,” says Fire Information Officer Alex Lane with the Prince George Fire Centre.

“So, those conditions – the hot and dry conditions and the wind influences – are leading to that growth and the fire is now 2,000 hectares in size.”

And though it is considered an interface fire, no structures are currently threatened. There are nine parattack personnel on scene with one helicopter providing bucket support.

An Incident Management team is expected to arrive today with additional resources incoming over the next several days.
