Quesnel council shoots down supportive housing proposal

QUESNEL — A proposed redevelopment of the Ramada Hotel at 383 St. Laurent Avenue was shot down at Quesnel city council this week due to “public concerns”.

BC Housing proposed renovating the Ramada Hotel into 45 new supportive homes, plus space for 15 temporary shelter spaces and 10 spaces for those sheltering from extreme weather. This project was a priority because those living at the Grace Inn will be out on the street once again as BC Housing’s lease there ends in the spring.

Quesnel residents who responded to the online survey were overwhelmingly against the supportive homes, citing “mental health and addiction concerns”. Some also said they didn’t want the housing to be near downtown.

Overall, 77 per cent of respondents were unsupportive of the plan while 19 per cent were in support.
