Former SD57 employee running for trustee position

PRINCE GEORGE — A former employee with the Prince George School District is taking a run at a trustee seat this fall.

Erica McLean spent eight years as a community school coordinator in School District 57 before resigning over the summer. So why run for office?

“It was a tricky decision but one that also seemed like the next logical step. I truly care about success for kids and I care about this work and this is a way I can continue to do that.”

One of her main priorities if elected would be to ’empower educators’. She says this is really important following the release of the special advisors report, which found systemic racism existed in the school district. She says she saw first hand how it affected teachers and students.

“And it was really difficult to watch that and kind of standby. My hope is to empower our educators so that they can begin to communicate and rebuild that relationship they have with education and just to remind them really that our community is here for them, that we truly care about what they do in their work days.”

McLean says her other priority is to create ‘community for kids.’

“I want to create a space where educators and our students are empowered and remind them that their work is to be celebrated. I think it’s an ‘all hands on deck approach.’ So what that means to me is that we can do this work together.”

Election day is October 15.
