Local groups pull vehicles out of Buckhorn Lake

PRINCE GEORGE- It was quite the scene at Buckhorn Lake when multiple different groups from the Prince George community gathered on the shores of the water.

“We’re actually doing a vehicle recovery, which started as one vehicle, and with our volunteer dive team, we figured out that there are four vehicles in here,” said Steve Hamilton, a member of 1 Campfire. “There was a Facebook post a couple of months ago, and somebody tagged me because we created the Backcountry Cleanups.”

Backcountry Cleanups, founded by the Spruce City Wildlife Association, has spent nearly a decade cleaning up our community.

“We created this program about six or seven years ago due to seeing posts on Facebook regarding illegal dumping,” said Hamilton. “We put out a call for volunteers asking to see who wants to come out and help and stakeholders that we’re going to help. Donate some time and some manpower.”

The mission on this day was to retrieve vehicles.

“The first thing is safety. We’ve got our dive team in the water, and they’re going to be controlling the shots,” Hamilton said. ” they’re going to be going out there with the straps and the cables from the wrecker securing the vehicle. Then they will give the thumbs up to remove these vehicles from the water.”

That is where conservation officers come in.

“We will be confirming the VINs with the RCMP just to confirm that they aren’t stolen vehicles,” said Eamon McArthur.

One of the many organizations on hand was natural resource spill officers soaking up any extra gas released from the truck.
