Officer cleared of wrongdoing: Police watchdog report
PRINCE GEORGE — A Prince George RCMP officer has been cleared of wrongdoing by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), B.C.’s police watchdog.
On May 14, 2022, police were flagged down by security at the CN Centre exhibition grounds and were told there was a male youth that was involved in a fight and may be in possession of a weapon.
After arriving at the scene, the officer in question approached the male suspect and told him he was being detained. Shortly thereafter, the male fled on foot, and a chase ensued. The male then ran in front of a southbound vehicle, which avoided him, but seconds later, the male ran into the median lane where he was struck by a second vehicle, which did did not see him.
The IIO concluded that the officer was committing no criminal act by approaching the individual to investigate. The officer was also entitled to detain the suspect for the reason of investigating him further, and was justified in pursuing the subject after he fled.
