PG jobless numbers still low

PRINCE GEORGE – The job numbers are out for September and they show that the unemployment rate at 4.3 percent, down from 5.1 percent in August. But the numbers, while they are good on paper, should be taken with a grain of salt.

“Fewer people looking for work. Low unemployment,” says Cory Naphtali with KPMG. “The population of Prince George is shown to be growing. But there were 55,500 people employed in the month of September and 55,800 people employed in the month of August. So fairly flat.”

But the Labour Minister is pretty bullish about the labour market.

“We know that Prince George has 13 percent higher employment than it did prior to the pandemic,” says Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. Minister Kahlon says there are more jobs than people in BC and more women in the workforce than ever before. But other things need to be taken into consideration, such as immigration, to meet the demand on the employment picture.
