Fire Prevention Week marks 100th birthday

PRINCE GEORGE — Fire prevention week has begun and this year it marks its 100th anniversary.

Every year, fire prevention week has a theme, and this year is no different with the theme being “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” In a statement released by the B.C. Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness noted that the number of fire-related deaths is increasing throughout the province, with 93 fatalities in 2022.

Everyone is encouraged to create a home fire-escape plan, as you may only have two minutes or less to escape from the time the smoke alarm goes off. Take time this week to check that the batteries in your smoke alarms are working and to create a fire-escape plan if you do not already have one

Prince George Fire and Rescue recommends that everyone should practise a home fire drill twice a year with everyone who lives in your household. Also, it is advised that you should know at least two ways out of every room, when possible. Smoke alarms should be installed inside every bedroom, and on every level of the house.
