PRINCE GEORGE – Recently, a resident has taken his talents of growing exotic mushrooms and made them grow into a successful business.

We met up with a local mushroom farmer in a place where mushrooms grow best in a – cool and damp location.

Located in the heart of Prince George, Joshua Halsband has a small mushroom-growing operation.

Growing mushrooms started as a hobby 15 years ago, and recently he found there is a growing appetite for his exotic mushrooms.

“A lot of times, the first question is, are these edible? I have to educate people. And tell them that anything you can do with a regular mushroom, you can do it, these guys. These mushrooms bring more flavour and more texture to your food party. And that always intrigues people.”

Mushrooms don’t grow like other fruits and vegetables; they require specific growing conditions.

Even though Halsband is relatively new to selling his cultivated product, a wide range of consumers enjoy the exotics he grows.

As the demand for Halsband exotic mushrooms continues to flourish, there are plans to expand his cool and damp location into a larger building.

The PG Urban Shroomery sells its mushrooms at the downtown farmers market, and “ an order of mushrooms” can be made on their Facebook page.”
