PRINCE GEORGE – Local birdwatchers have taken their love for wild animals to another level.

An unusual sighting sent them on a rescue mission from Prince George to Vancouver to save a hummingbird.

Clive Keen is an avid birdwatcher and says the sight of Rufous hummingbirds during this time of year is rare in our region.

“ I’m looking at this and getting it’s about to get really cold. This should have been in Mexico two months ago. What the heck do we do? “

Keen was thrilled to see the bird, but it also concerned him. So he rallied other birdwatchers for help on what to do to try and save it.

“ So I took some advice, put up a bird cage, put a hummingbird feeder inside it, and waited for two and a half days. And finally, two and a half days later, my wife was absolutely heroic and caught the bird.”

According to Keen, the delicate bird could not survive the overnight temperatures up north, as it’s supposed to be enjoying the warm temperatures of Mexico.

So the next day, Keen’s wife drove the bird 800 kilometres south to Vancouver and released it, hoping it would find a warmer place for the winter.
