North District and Prince George RCMP Pay Respects to Fallen Officer, Cst. Shaelyn Yang

Nov 2, 2022 | 5:37 PM

PRINCE GEORGE- The flags outside RCMP detachments in Prince George have been flying at half mast ever since news first broke of the tragic death of Cst. Shaelyn Yang. It’s tradition to lower the flags when an officers dies, a mark of respect for a fallen comrade, and a sister in blue. Her death in the line of duty sent shock waves through the Police Forces and First Responders of Canada, many of whom sent delegations to attend the funeral procession.

Officers from both the Prince George RCMP, and the North District RCMP were in attendance, in an official capacity, but paid their own way to attend, a quite sign of the importance these events have to men and women who serve and protect. Even on a day like this, there are still RCMP Officers standing by at every detachment around the country ready to answer the call, and each of them with heavy hearts.

“It’s like losing a family member or a friend, as law enforcement officers we share a close bond of shared experiences, we all trained at the same place, and we all had similar experience getting through the application process… because we live shared experiences that creates a bond, even though we dont know one another personally.” – Cpl. Jennifer Cooper – Prince George RCMP Media Relations Officer

As the funeral services come to a close at sunset Wednesday night, RCMP stations across the country will hoist their flags back to full mast, marking the end of a period of mourning, for a young RCMP Officer killed in the line of duty. A life cut tragically short, but a young woman’s story that resonated across our nation.

Donations can be made to the BC Children’s Hospital, Honour House, or the BC SPCA, in her name. Members of the public are invited to sign a virtual book of
condolences for the family, available on the RCMP website.
