Northern Health is forging partners for research

PRINCE GEORGE – Northern Health is on its way to becoming a teaching health community.

“Part of the byproduct of providing care for people is that we’re generating data at the same time,” explains Dr. Julia Bickford. “And so as we are providing care for them, we’re also creating data that we can ask questions and explore questions about how can we do better? Where is this working for people? Where can we do better for people? And so a learning health community is using that data that we’re generating to provide care in order to answer those questions.”

Northern Health has partnered with the likes of UNBC and UBC to coordinate the dissemination of that data, with the creation, for example, Northern Centre for Clinical Research, with Northern Health providing the infrastructure.

And Dr. Bickford says having one of the best research-intensive universities in Northern Health’s backyard is a bonus.

“It’s so important and we have a longstanding relationship with UNBC at Northern Health. We have a memorandum of understanding with UNBC and so that really helps us identify our shared priorities and helps us really focus in over the next three years. What is it that we want to work on together?”

The three-year MOU provides things like seed money for research teams to focus on issues relevant to the North and workshops to enhance research skills. And part of the learning health community concept is to identify gaps. And there are four questions regularly asked.

“And so these are the types of questions that we like to answer. One is around patient experience. So how are patients doing in the health care system? What are their outcomes looking like? How are they experiencing our system? Another group of questions we like to ask is about provider experiences.”

The remaining two questions are around the value of the provision of health care and, lastly, population care, beyond individual care, is there a segment of the population that is not receiving health care services?
