Electric vehicles and how they operate in the winter

PRINCE GEORGE — Electric vehicles are becoming a more common sight on our roads. Many of us know what it is like to get up on a cold winter morning on our way to work and having to deal with a car that has a rough time starting. It might take a couple of tries before you’re successful or you may have to get a jump start. Either way, it is a hassle. For electric vehicle owners, the struggle is not as great.

Doug Beckett, who is with the Prince George Electric Vehicles Association, says that his electric vehicle, a Nissan Leaf, starts in just ten seconds in the cold weather.

Charging an electric vehicle or EV is not a complicated process. For Doug, he plugs in his car at home, and it is fully charged when he is ready to head out. The charging process doesn’t take him any longer in cold weather than it might in regular temperatures.

With more charging stations popping up, it is easier for an EV owner to find a place to charge their vehicle when on the road, and at a common charging station, like some here in Prince George, it may only cost you 0.25 cents per minute to charge up your electric vehicle.

Many EV’s are being now released with a longer range, meaning they can go further in distance than previous models might have in years past. With cold and long winters in the Prince George area, an electric vehicle is up to the winter test, just as much as your regular gas powered car.
