Safe driving tips for slippery city streets

PRINCE GEORGE- To Stud or not to Stud… that’s the question on the minds of many Northerners this season. While All-weather and All Seasons tires are legal on city streets and BC highways year round, running studded tires out of season, with their metal grips that dig into the ice and snow, can net you a sizeable fine. The added hassle of swapping your tires, and the additional cost of installing studs, is a deterrent for some but the choice of tire has a lot to do with your safety on winter streets.

Given the extreme cold this part of Northern BC experiences, road crews at the Prince George City Yard have a number of different treatments available depending on the conditions. Fracture is essentially specialized crushed stone, and you’ll see it on city streets when temperature drop low enough that salt becomes ineffective. It’s the city’s alternative to sand, something that’s been known to cause air quality issues during the spring melt, due to PG’s dry and moistureless climate.

Windshield cracks and chips are common on Canadian highways, especially in winter, and with streets as slick as they are up here, it’s not unthinkable that you could end up in a fender bender too, so the best thing you could do is be prepared for the possibility, know your options for how to report a claim, and plan your trips according to the weather.
