CARIBOO REGION — The Nazko First Nation announced the opening of a new nine-unit Rapid Housing Complex which will provide on-reserve housing for the most vulnerable citizens, women & children, those with disabilities and Elders.

Located 100 km West of Quesnel, the first nation has approximately 410 citizens including 150 living on and off reserve.

In a grand opening ceremony, the Nazko First Nation is excited to welcome people to the complex and show citizens the new housing opportunities.

“The new housing opportunity for Nazko is a great honor. As a Chief, it is the most sought-after goal to help, house, and protect my people. Bringing them home is my dream and providing them the safety of our leadership in a Nazko. Suchanailya,” says Chief Leah Stump.

In partnership with the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) through the Government of Canada, $3.5 million is being contributed to the housing complex.

Additionally, approximately $900,000 is being added from Indigenous Services Canada.

Stump adds that the partnership with the government, “has helped us to build strong relationships which foster co-operation and respect to self-determine our basic right for safe and affordable housing.”

The Nazko First Nation hosted a Grand Opening Ceremony for the Sbalyan ‘Ut’o “Eagles Nest” on November 9 officially opening the complex at 9663 Nazko Road.
