British Columbians to receive cost of living credits

VANCOUVER — British Columbia has a new premier and he’s giving residents a $100 cost-of-living credit on their electricity bills as his first act.

David Eby, who was sworn in at a ceremony today at the Musqueam Community Centre in Vancouver, says people and small businesses in the province are feeling the squeeze of global inflation.

The government says in a statement the one-time credit will be applied automatically to B-C Hydro bills this fall and the Crown-owned utility can afford it due to market conditions that resulted in trade and domestic revenues.

Eby has also established a B-C Affordability Credit for low- and middle-income residents starting in January that will provide up to $164 for adults and $41 for children.
