MP calls opening of new passport office in PG ‘a win’ for northerners

PRINCE GEORGE — The federal government will open a passport office in Prince George this spring.

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould confirmed the news yesterday (Nov.24).

Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach says he’s been pushing for the office for months, and calls it a win for the roughly 300,000 residents of northern BC.

“The lack of passport services in our region has forced residents to travel long distances at significant personal cost just to access a basic government service,” he says. “I’m glad the minister has heard our voices and agreed to remedy the situation.”

Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Todd Doherty agrees it’s great news.

“I am extremely pleased the federal government has decided to hear the frustrations of the people of Prince George and finally open a Passport Canada office in Northern BC. From the first door I knocked on during my nomination in 2014, I heard loud and clear that this was a priority for my constituents.

“Since 2015, we have worked tirelessly with successive Minister’s, their departments and my parliamentary colleagues across the political spectrum towards today’s announcement.”

Currently, BC has passport offices in Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria, and Kelowna.
