Cougars fall to Blazers 6-5 in OT

PRINCE GEORGE — The Kamloops Blazers came into Prince George to face off against the Cougars and won the first game of the weekend series in overtime.

Winning 6-5 in overtime, the Blazers got the best of the Cougars despite Prince George riding their three-goal momentum heading into the extra period.

The Blazers jumped out to an early four-goal lead in the game in the opening period that was started with Shea Van Olm’s fifth goal of the year.

Prince George’s Chase Wheatcroft provided a spark for the Cougars scoring the first goal of the game for PG making the score 4-1 for Kamloops.

Goals were traded to end the second period by both sides as the Cougars found themselves in a 5-2 hole heading into the third period.

The final frame of the game of a different story for PG as Riley Heidt scored early to cut the lead to 5-3.

Shortly after, Tyson Buczkowski buried his first goal of the year making the score 5-4.

The game was then tied by Blake Eastman with under five minutes remaining in the third period bringing the Cougars all the way back in the game.

Fraser Minten burst the Cougars’ bubble however scoring the overtime winner for the Blazers and spoiling Prince George’s comeback.

Both squads will square off again Saturday in the second game of their weekend series.
