COUGARS RECAP

1st half of the season recap: Prince George Cougars

Dec 20, 2022 | 4:32 PM

PRINCE GEORGE– The Prince George Cougars have had an up-and-down season so far this year. The team is currently 14-15-3-0 and 5th in the Western Conference.

Although the record doesn’t look positive the team has shown signs of fight. A good example of that is handing the Seattle Thunderbirds their first loss of the season on October 29th. However, players know the team has to play better in the 2nd half.

“I think we have to be consistent every night. I know we all want to win here. We all have been through the losing, but I think it’s just a big second half. We got to get some points and it’s the most important time of the year.” – Koehn Ziemmer, Cougars Forward

The team was 13-15 at this time last year however this time it feels a little bit different. For the first time in a while, the team feels it can compete with others around the WHL. Beating good teams like Portland, Moose Jaw, and Kamloops. But the players know you can always improve and for Cougars Forward Rielly Heidt that improvement is closing games out when the team has the lead.

“I think just over the break we all got to get rest and just come in with the mindset of winning games. And I think, we have all the tools in the room and staff and whatnot. So I think just being able to finish close games off and once you’re up, find the maturity in the room to hold the lead instead of just giving it up.” –Riley Heidt, Cougars Forward

The break seems like a blessing for this Cougars team after a road trip that saw them go 1-4-1 and hampered by the flu going through the locker room. It’s a break that is much needed for players and coaches. With the goal of coming back fully rested and snapping the funk that saw them go 1-6-3 in their last 10 games before the holidays.

“Every year is a little bit different and this year is really different. The road trip we had just gone through, the break that’s coming up is going to be a little bit better for this hockey club at this time.” – Mark Lamb, Head Coach & GM, Prince George Cougars

Another important date on the Cougars calendar is January 10th, the WHL Trade deadline. The Cougars have made some big additions to the team in Cole Dubinsky and Jaxson Weibe. Although every GM is open-minded around the deadline, Head Coach and GM Mark Lamb is hoping to see how his full team looks after a couple of weeks’ rest heading into the new year, before making any drastic changes to the lineup.

“We’ve got a really good core and that core won’t be going anywhere. Can we add to that core? We’re always looking to chip away at it and to get a little bit better. That being said, some of the moves that we’ve made, we haven’t been able to put all these guys on the ice at the same time. So it’d be nice to be able to see that a little bit. And then you can evaluate.” – Mark Lamb, Head Coach & GM, Prince George Cougars

The team will be back at the rink in late December preparing for the 2nd half of the year before taking on Kamloops on December 30th and 31st
