New call after crash function is sending false alarms

PRINCE GEORGE- It was less than a month ago when CKPG did a story on Apple’s new call after a crash function.

Now, as those here in B.C. adventure into the backwoods, some problems have occurred.

“About a week and a half ago, there were four false activations in the backwoods of B.C. that triggered it, and that was quite concerning to have in such a short period,” said Dwight Yochim, A senior manager with the BCSARA.

The system recognizes sudden declarations, loud crashes of metal and the pressure of an airbag, all things that are a part of an everyday trip to the forest.

“That combination of things is designed to trigger either your Apple Watch or your Apple iPhone 14,” said Yochim.

Since Apple launched the software back in November, two updates have been released both including “crash detection optimizations” which if all goes well will limit the number of false activations.

Adventuresmart and the BC Search and Rescue Association urge people to plan ahead.

“We like to take a few steps back and remind everyone to follow the three T’s,” said Sandra Riches, the Executive Director of BC Adventuresmart.

Those three T’s are trip planning, training and taking the essentials, If you would like to find out more about these before you head out on your next adventure head to Adventruesmart.ca
