Freezing Rain

Boxing Day freezing rain continues to wreak havoc on city streets

PRINCE GEORGE- It all started in the early morning hours of Boxing Day, a warm front moving across the central interior saw temperatures rise suddenly enough that moisture hanging around the local area started falling as rain. While that might seem like a welcome change from after about a week of record breaking cold, temperatures on the ground during the early morning showers we’re still low enough that falling rain actually began to freeze on contact.

While the freeze-thaw cycle of the North is nothing out of the ordinary for Prince George, Boxing Day’s freezing rain was significant enough to trigger a special weather statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada, a travel advisory from the local RCMP, and numerous highway condition alerts.

As temperatures change, road conditions do too, and snow clearing crews change tactics. Prince George plow crews are no exception, as they work around the clock over the holidays to keep up with the triple threat of record-breaking cold, snowfall warnings, and icy streets.
