Local MP demanding action regarding travel disruptions

PRINCE GEORGE- Tens of thousands of people across the country were delayed, cancelled or stranded this holiday season.

Now MP Taylor Bachrach is calling on the transport committee for answers.

“What we saw over the holidays were travel disruptions and situations where airlines, especially Sunwing, failed to provide passengers with the basic level of customer care that they deserve,” said Bachrach.

While delays have been common throughout many airlines Sunwing has struggled immensely to get people home, with some families being stranded for days leading to nights spent in airport and hotel lobbies. The government of Canada has regulations to prevent these nightmares, But has Bachrach says the regulations are flawed.

“We’re far behind where the European Union is in protecting air passengers,” said Bachrach.

The MP also describes the regulations as one with loopholes for the airlines to jump through. However, fines could be issued in that situation but are they?

“Under the law, the airlines could be fined up to $25,000 per passenger, per incident per violation, but that’s not happening,” says Dr. Gabor Lukacs, the president of Air Passenger Rights.

In the letter to the transport committee, Bachrach says that ” it is important that in these hearings include a two-hour appearance by the minister of transport Omar Alghabra.”

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has also suggested more competition for major airlines in Canada to try and help passengers travel smoothly in the years to come.
