PRINCE GEORGE – What started as a family vacation to Mexico has turned into a stressful situation.

Jennifer Oviatt and her four kids were supposed to fly home from Mazatlan, Mexico on Friday but due to the ongoing civil unrest and violence that plane never touched down to pick them up.

Loved ones here in Prince George worry about the family and how long they will have to wait for the situation to clear.

Oviatt who was unavailable for a video interview did say she was worried about when she would be able to return to the UNBC teaching program and when her children would be able to return to school.

Much of the violence appears focused in the city of Culiacan, where airline Aeromexico said one of its passenger planes was struck by a bullet during the fighting.

However three airports, including the one in Mazatlán have been closed since the civil unrest began. The Mazatlán airport did re-open for a period of time Friday but many Canadian-bound flights were cancelled.
