PRINCE GEORGE- To date, 13 members of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation are facing civil contempt charges relating to the ongoing blockade and protest against the construction of the Coastal Gas Link Pipeline through their traditional unceded territory. Sleydo’, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief, and spokesperson for the Gidimt’en checkpoint, says the focus of their fight is the recognition of indigenous sovereignty, and ensuring that Canada respects it’s obligations to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which is why Amnesty International Canada has joined the fray.
