Exploration Place needs volunteers

PRINCE GEORGE – It was two years ago members of the community came out in force to donate cuttings for a paleo-botanical wall at Exploration Place as part of a major overhaul. And the clippings are no longer stubby little plants in jars anymore.

“So I remember when this was just being built and you were taking cuttings and, wow, now it’s getting a little out of hand. It’s starting to grow in. It’s definitely starting with. We’ve cut it back a few times. Over the past. Oh, how many months? It grows. Grows pretty fast now,” says Chad Hellenius, the resident botanist at Exploration Place.

And maintaining it is virtually a full-time job and the Exploration Place is once again calling on the community to help with the paleo-botanical wall, much it did two years ago.

“We need help. We would love volunteers to come in and play with plants. If you if you love plants. And we know a lot of people out there in the community, do we? We saw that when we did that call out for cuttings. People just rushed to us and and and we loved that. So yeah. So what would they be required to do just for maintenance or are you taking cuttings and maybe giving them selling what will be they will be taking a lot of cuttings.”

The plan is to eventually have the cuttings for sale at the museum.

“So we take cuttings of them. Why get rid of the cuttings? Let’s propagate the cuttings. We will likely be selling those in our retail shop. You know, some of the people are quite generous with us. So so we want to be generous back as well. We want to train these these these vines all throughout the atrium as well, so that it is really a green oasis.”

The Exploration Place is looking for volunteers to take on some of the work. Hellenius says he’d be more than willing to take those calls.
