Mayor says ring road is needed

PRINCE GEORGE — The debate of a potential ring road is on again as Mayor Simon Yu has called for a need to build a ring road, diverting traffic off of Highway 16 in the downtown core. Mayor Yu has expressed that with upcoming discussions on the Official Community Plan, he wants the ring road to be a focus.

He wants less truck traffic downtown, citing safety reasons as the dangerous goods is on Highway 16/Victoria Street.

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad, also believes the ring road idea is a good one as he believes it would reduce traffic.

However, the proposal does have its critics and James Steidle is one of them, saying that it will divert traffic and tourism downtown.

The route that Mayor Yu would like to see is Highway 16 being diverted at Blackwater Road, cutting through and crossing the Fraser River, then linking up with Boundary Road, out by the Prince George Airport.

This idea is by no means a done deal and if it is to be, it will be years before shovels hit the ground.
