PRINCE GEORGE– The UNBC men’s Basketball team might’ve found a diamond in the rough at the Point Guard position. Justin Sunga has really blossomed into a great player at the Canada West level. The Freshman guard is top 6 in every major category including points, assists, and steals for 1st-year players in Canada West. Sunga had his senior year of high school basketball wiped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited his options. However, that lead him to commit to the UNBC Timberwolves.

“I didn’t really get my senior year of high school, which was unfortunate, but it landed me here and I’m in a great spot right now, Coach Todd was one of the only coaches that really gave gave me a chance and I’m really grateful for that. So that’s why I chose UNBC” – Justin Sunga, Freshman Guard, UNBC Timberwolves

Sunga started the year coming off the bench, however, he started showing his potential throughout the year. winning player of the game 3 times in the New Year and consistently making an impact on the game. Forcing Head Coach Todd Jordon to make a change in his starting lineup after the progression Sunga showed.

“He’s been so steady and I think over the course of the last few weeks, guys are just really enjoying playing with them. I mean, the one thing that Justin really has as a strength is I think he understands where guys want the ball and he understands how to make guys better and he plays really unselfishly. It’s been really good for our team.” – Todd Jordan, Head Coach

Sunga has rewarded the Twolves capped off by his recent performance against TRU which saw the freshman guard drop 37 over the 2 games. A highlight of the season for the Burnaby South Alumni.

“It was really fun and obviously being the last two home games of the season we had to put on for the city and we really brought the energy and that’s I think that’s the most important part.” – Justin Sunga, Freshman Guard, UNBC Timberwolves

Now Sunga looks to finish his rookie season on a high note with the goal of making some noise in the playoffs but it’s been a whirlwind journey that included a lot of learning along the way.

“Obviously, being a freshman, and being new to the school took some adjusting for me. But, you know, I’ve really learned a lot of things. I’d say one of the most important things I’ve learned is to take it day by day, and that comes with the season too taking it game by game.” – Justin Sunga, Freshman Guard, UNBC Timberwolves

The Twolevs and Justin will take on Brandon this weekend for the last 2 games of the regular season before preparing for playoffs.
