PRINCE GEORGE — A new report released by a public policy think-tank says that the B.C. government spending has reached the highest level on record.

The Fraser Institue has released a report saying that B.C. government spending has reached the highest level on record. The report says that the highest year of spending was in 2021 under former Premier John Horgan.

The highest single year of per-person spending between 1965 to 2021 was under Premier John Horgan in 2021—reaching $13,250. Excluding COVID related spending, per-person spending ($12,533) in 2021 is still by far the highest on record.

Opposition Finance critic Peter Milobar says that the money being spent is not equating to actual results.

Alex Hemingway with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says that the report is showing an incomplete picture of government spending. He says that there are some difficulties with evaluating per capita spending and says that per capita spending should increase each year, unless the goal for the role of the public sector and the economy to shrink.

With the provincial budget due to be tabled at the end of the month, all eyes will be on what will be in the budget to further lay out the government’s priorities.
