Meals on Wheels needs help

PRINCE GEORGE – “Approximately 65 to 75. But we do have 105 people that eat regularly.”

That’s Angie Fretter describing the number of meals and clients for the Meals of Wheels program that she produces each day out of the kitchen in the Seniors Activity Centre on Brunswick. While the program is a logistical challenge some days, some things have cropped up that many it even more challenging to get all those meals to seniors, starting with drivers.

“We need volunteers, first and foremost, to expand our program,” explains Nicole Currie, Coordinator of Meals on Wheels. “We have a lot of volunteers that are taking time off, and they’re larger chunks of time due to having surgeries and things like that. Some are taking holidays now. So we need to replace those drivers before we can, in fact, expand the program.”

And the one obstacle everyone is that everyone is feeling, not just meals on wheels, is the skyrocketing cost of food.

What keeps Nicole Currie awake at night as she coordinates the program is the fact the seniors who access Meals on Wheels are on fixed incomes.

“But it’s very difficult to keep feeding seniors the portions that they need. With the with the cost of food going up so much so it is a struggle on their end and, you know, unfortunately, we may have to do another price increase in the near future.”

And Currie says there are ways people can help.

“We have our own adopt a senior program that started. It’s been going on for just over a year now and we collect funds from donors there and we use that for seniors that have no money for food. And so we take care of them and help them get on their feet that way.”

And, of course, food donations of any kind would be welcome by Angie.

“Oh, that would be wonderful. That would be great if we could do that, we could keep the prices down. If someone would come along and say, Here’s a bunch of money, that would be nice.”

There are about 20 people on the waitlist for Meals on Wheels and the wait time is at a minimum, three months long.
