PRINCE GEORGE — The Coldest Night of the Year is taking place on Saturday February 25, and for Prince George, this is the sixth year for the event.

The Coldest Night of the Year in Prince George is hosted by AWAC, the Association Advocating for Women and Community. Connie Abe is the executive director and told CKPG News more about the event.

“Coldest Night of the Year is our yearly fundraising event. That’s a winter walk that’s either a two or five or ten k that raises funds that goes towards the the homeless community, the programs that we support or we offer to support individuals that are struggling with addiction and wanting to to start to recover.” – Connie Abe, Executive Director, AWAC

The funds raised during Coldest Night of the Year go to AWAC, which is a non-profit that opened in 1994 and that provides safe and supportive shelter for street-involved women and men. AWAC supports individuals who may be experiencing homelessness, struggling with addiction or mental health to attain a life of wellness.

“The funds that we use are because a lot of the individuals that are are starting to go into wanting to start the journey of recovery. They generally have nothing when they come, right. And so the funds are used to provide, you know, if we have to get medications, we have to get clothing, food, any sort of supplies, sense and stuff like that for them when they’re coming into our program.” – Connie Abe, Executive Director, AWAC

Kim Suel, who experienced homelessness last year, has benefitted from the services that AWAC provides. Kim went into detox, made it through and has now been clean for a year now.

“And I made it through. And then I just and then I went to Olive Branch for six months, made it there for the full six months. And then I came here and now I’m been upstairs at the apartments up here for another six months and I just did a year clean as of February 7th, it was my one year clean.” – Kim Suel, AWAC Outreach Worker

So far, Prince George’s Coldest Night of the Year has 109 walkers and 23 teams participating. The fundraising goal is $34,000 dollars, and to donate or find more information, on Coldest Night of the Year or AWAC, you can visit cnoy.org/location/princegeorge or AWAC’s website.
