PRINCE GEORGE — The future of forestry is going to be discussed at a forum next week and a group of speakers will be looking at how to increase sustainability and maximize job potential in the industry.

The forestry sector has been dealing with many setbacks recently and there has been lots of discussion on the path going forward for the industry in British Columbia. James Steidle, is the organizer of the Future of Forestry forum and says that they wanted to bring the community together to talk about what can be done to make sure that forestry remains a key part of the economy here in Prince George.

“We’ve lost 2000 direct mill jobs in Prince George since the late 1990s, already, including many more in the bush, so that there has been a change in the industry and it hasn’t been necessarily because we’re logging less, it’s because the industry is becoming so efficient, so over invested in itself that we’re actually losing jobs.” – James Steidle, Organizer, Future for Forestry forum

MLA Mike Morris will be participating in the forum and his reasoning for participating is strong.

“I think we need a different approach. We’ve been practicing the sustainable yield model for the past 78 years in British Columbia. We’re out of harvestable trees. Know the way we knew them with the primary force and whatnot. So we need to bring balance back.” – Mike Morris, MLA Prince George-Mackenzie

The Future of Forestry forum will take place on Tuesday February 28th at the Canfor Theatre at UNBC, starting at 6:30pm, with each speaker giving a 20 minute presentation followed by a question and answer session. Speakers will include Morris, Mayor Simon Yu, Liam Parfitt, co-owner of Freya logging and others.
