Outdoor Ice Oval done for the season

PRINCE GEORGE – The weather was not kind for Prince George’s outdoor ice oval this winter.

A long stretch of freeze-thaw weather created turmoil for ice conditions, and ultimately caused cracks in the ice surface which could not be repaired.

Kathy Lewis, President of the Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval Society said once again there will be less than 50 skating days for locals.

The last day the oval was open for skating this season was January 28th.

Lewis said the permanent solution to keep the oval open longer on the shoulder seasons is a concrete refrigerated pad which would minimalize impacts from temperature variations.

“A beautiful day like this would be perfect to come out skating, even when it’s a little bit above zero, the refrigeration would be able to hold us in there,” said Lewis. “The other bonus with the concrete surface, the oval could be used in the summer for various uses.”
