RCMP Youth Academy back in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – After a multi-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the RCMP Youth Academy is back in action here in Prince George.

“Students that do come here have a good time and they learn a lot,” said Cst. Trevor Hurley with the PG RCMP. “It’s not an easy week by any means, we push them and but at the end, it’s been a huge experience for recruits.”

This year’s group consists of 18 high school students, an almost even split of male and female recruits.

Throughout the week, the recruits get a wide array of presentations including details on police forensics, police dog tactics, handcuffing techniques, and even media relations with special help from us here at the CKPG News.

The hope is this program will inspire some future mounties, or if not at least give a better understanding of the ins and outs of being a police officer.

Many members of the Prince George RCMP are products of the local youth academy.

The program is open annually to Grade 11 and Grade 12 students within SD57. Recently the program obtained a place in the curriculum so participating students can get credits towards their graduation.
