PRINCE GEORGE — A local author has published his third book, the first one in 20 years, about chuckwagon racing at the Calgary Stampede.

Glen Mikkelsen, is the author of The Rangeland Derby, 100 years of chuckwagon racing at the Calgary Stampede.

“Well, 2023 is the 100th anniversary of chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede. So really the first professional chuckwagon races happened in 1923 in Calgary. And so this book talks about ten decades of what I would argue is Canada’s greatest race. There aren’t many people that do it right now. There’s less than 100 people on the planet who can race truck wagons at a professional level.” – Glen Mikkelsen

This book, Glen says, celebrates an event and a spectacle that is unique to Canada, unique to Calgary, and he hopes that maybe with this book that there will be some chuckwagon ambassadors. Mikkelsen said he wanted to showcase one of Canada’s most unique competitions, and that this was a bucket list item for him.

“Well, for me to do this book is one thing that I’ve always hoped to do. I think it’s just such a special event, and I just wanted to share that with people and to have that opportunity to do that means a tremendous amount.” – Glen Mikkelsen
