PRINCE GEORGE- It was the final day of the Northern Addiction Engagement and Knowledge Exchange Forum at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre.

Among the hundreds of people in attendance was Elena Sterritt. While those in the building may not have seen her, the work done by Sterritt is very visual.

Sterritt is a graphic recorder whose job is to listen to presentations, stories and engage in conversations, turning what she hears into art to be displayed to all at the forum.

“It’s honestly amazing,” said Sterritt. ” I’ve only been doing this work for about a year and a half now, so it’s really empowering and really powerful to be included in a community and be included in these conversations.”

The Northern Addiction Engagement and Knowledge Exchange Forum focuses on conversations around the toxic drug crisis in first nations communities, and to connect with all people, art is key.

Sterritt’s work is vibrant with colours and different designs, a strategy she uses intentionally.

“I feel like to express the empowerment, the joy and the sadness, we use different colours and different symbols and flow,” said Sterritt.
