PRINCE GEORGE – The signs of spring are undeniable in the Northern Capital, and it’s got the cities skate skiers amped up to hit the trails while they still can.

Conditions in the late season can be a mixed bag. As the groomer crews at Caledonia Nordic Ski club explain, trail conditions can vary widely depending on overnight temperatures the night before and weather conditions during the day. From frozen hard pack in the early morning, to softer snow in the afternoons. it takes a lot of work to keep trails in peak conditions, and allow two styles of skiers to co-exist on the same trail.

With all the moving parts that keep ski trails operational, spotting a groomer crew on the job can be a bit of an intimidating sight, but it’s important to remember that the men and women at snow-cat controls are passionate skiers themselves, who are just as passionate about their art of trail building. So next time you see them on the trails, from a safe distance, give ’em a thank-you wave, since smiles adorning their guest’s faces, are a sure sign to a groomer operator of a job well done.
