PRINCE GEORGE — A 66-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted an RCMP officer over the weekend.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says the alleged assault happened shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25.

She says it happened near the intersection of Highway 97 N and 10 Avenue after the suspect was pulled over for a vehicle stop. During the stop, she alleges he exited his vehicle and began assaulting the officer.

“Three members of the public came to the police officer’s aid and assisted in helping him gain control of the suspect. They remained with the suspect until other police officers arrived at the location and placed the man under arrest.”

Cooper says the officer was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries. The suspect, Robert Charles Waite, was also assessed at hospital before being transported to Prince George detachment cells.

The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved the following charges against Waite:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Two counts of assaulting a peace office

Waite was released back into the community on a release order with a future court date.

Inspector Darren Woroshelo, Officer in Charge of Northern B.C. Highway Patrol, thanks the individuals for their actions in this situation.

“They undoubtedly prevented further injury from happening to our police officer, while risking their own safety to do so.”
