PRINCE GEORGE — After the City of Prince George retired its mascot “Mr.PG”, the city has unveiled the replacement for the roadside attraction.

Dewey will serve as the new mascot for the city. The roadside figure will be placed at the centre of a new traffic circle which will replace the current signaled intersection at Highways 16 and 97, according to the city.

Furthermore, the city says the water droplet represents the two rivers and is an acknowledgement to the up-and-coming hydrogen industry.

“It’s always been important for us to embrace industry in Prince George. The new mascot shows the world that we are moving forward with a diversified economy,” said Mayor Simon Yu in a statement.

“The new traffic circle is a great location for Dewey to greet visitors to Prince George. Not only will it significantly improve traffic flow in a busy area, but it will also give drivers something fun to look at.”

City officials say the cost of the mascot design and building it came at $785,000. City staff commissioned the American design firm, So and So to create the roadside sculpture.

Yu added that his goal is to ” eliminate all traffic lights in Prince George and replace them all with traffic circles so we can move around faster.”

Mr.PG will remain at it’s current site until it is removed next year on April Fool’s Day.
