Local RCMP offers up motorcycle safety tips
PRINCE GEORGE – It might be the first week of April, but it’s officially spring. The weather is mild, the pavement is mostly dry, and that’s the green light avid motorcycle enthusiasts have been waiting for to dust off their bikes, grab their helmets, and head for the wide open road, and of course the local RCMP is once again reminding riders, and regular four wheel drivers alike, to proceed with caution, since mother nature can be unpredictable this time of year.
As much fun as motorcycles can be, the high octane thills riders enjoy, don’t come without their fair share of risk attached. According to data collected by ICBC, over a 5 year period, Motorcycles totaled only 3.5% of vehicles on the roads, but accounted for about 10% of all fatalities. With statistics like that, RCMP Officers around the province are once again reminding the public to take safety seriously, and offer up some tried and true tips, for when you’re out and about on the bikes.
Recognizing the challenges that come with two wheels, ICBC has put together a refresher course, called “Tuning Up for Riders” which is available online under their Driving Guides tab, alongside their “Learn to Ride Smart” riders guide, for new riders. Motorcyclists of all ages are encouraged to brush up on the rules of the road, and best practices, before they hit the blacktop.
