Selen Alpay recognized with UNBC honorary degree for lifetime of charity
PRINCE GEORGE- Selen Alpay got his start at Canadian Tire back in the 1970s in Ontario. Starting out with inventory counts once a month, he eventually worked his way up through the store ranks, making stops in each department along the way, dealing in everything from tires to fertilizer, honing his self taught customer service skills and business expertise until he finally opened a store of his own, 15 years ago right here in Prince George.
Mr Alpay was recently chosen to receive an honorary doctor of laws from UNBC, at their upcoming Convocation. He’ll join other university grads on stage come graduation day as the University recognizes his lifelong dedication to charity, and his tireless fundraising efforts. Mr Alpay was all smiles, deeply humbled, and nearly lost for words, as he reflected on the emotions that came with the phonecall informing him of the honor.
The recognition is of his lifelong support of countless charities around the world, and his tireless support for non-profits and community service groups here at home. For the past 9 years, thanks to Mr Alpay’s work, Canadian Tire has been the presenting sponsor of the UNBC Timberwolves Legacy fundraiser. UNBC’s Athletic director says that investment in the next generation of northern athletes has been a blessing for the fledgling university.
