Federal workers take strike action

PRINCE GEORGE — Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) hit picket lines across the country this morning including here in Prince George.

As of 6 pm Pacific time yesterday, Canada’s largest federal public-service union has left the bargaining table, calling on the federal government to come back with a new offer. Picket lines have been set up across Canada this morning after negotiations between the union and the government failed to produce an agreement by last night’s deadline. With around 155,000 thousand workers on strike, everything from tax return processing to passport applications will be affected.

Some of the agencies affected by the strike are the Canada Revenue Agency, Employment and Social Development Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Global Affairs and even the Coast Guard. Many of the departments say that essential services would be maintained but that there may be delays with services .

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says that the union’s demand will cost taxpayers $9.3 billion. Franco Terrazzano federal director of the CTF says quote “families are trying to figure out whether they can afford milk or ground beef at the grocery store and government union negotiators are asking for an extra 9.3 billion” and that the government’s bargaining position needs to be absolute no to these demands. Federal governments in the past have used back to work legislation to end strikes and return workers to the office, but that is something that the NDP will not be voting for.

The prime minister is calling for more negotiations and to quickly hammer out a deal to avoid serious disruptions, but whether that happens remains to be seen.
