PRINCE GEORGE — This weekend, the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre is home to the Network of Emergency Support Services Team (NESST) conference, with representatives coming across BC to discuss and learn about emergency support services.

The 10th Annual Network of Emergency Support Services Teams or NESST Conference is being held in Prince George from April 21 to 23, bringing together emergency support services or ESS volunteers, First Nations representatives, local government emergency management staff, and local and provincial support agencies. At this year’s event, there are over 190 registrants from over 21 communities across the province.

NESST was a Northern organization but has recently expanded to include members from around British Columbia and the organization is bigger than one might think. ESS volunteers are ready 24/7 365 days a year to help out individuals when they need it the most.

“We have not only have responders or volunteers, but we have emergency program coordinators which are generally staff positions within municipalities. We have service agencies like Samaritan’s Purse and Salvation Army here on site. Red Cross is here. Anyone who really is going to kind of join forces to try and help out in a major emergency event we do have on site here … We’re the group that’s going to show up. We’re going to show up at 3 a.m. We’re going to show up on a weekend. We’re going to show up on holiday. We’re going to be there to help out.” – Tanya Spooner, Manager of Emergency Programs, City of Prince George

Since its inception the NESST Conference has provided multiple training, best practices, and networking opportunities to prepare ESS responders to lead and support individuals and communities impacted by evacuations.
